Genre Research Task
Before we began planning our short film I began researching into different genres and find one that I believe could hit the market the best. Some genres can have a limited audience such as Horror films as the majority are intended for over 18 audiences. On the other hand their are teen dramas such as This is England, it is based in 1983 and only has saturated release because of its challenging and difficult narrative.
Action
To begin one of the most recognisable genres is Action, such films include James Bond, Die Hard, The Great Escape and Saving Private Ryan. Action films are high budget and have a huge saturated release across the world. They are usually high adrenaline and widely entertaining to watch, within these films you see the antagonist and protagonist (leads the narrative forward/the good guy), for example in Die Hard Bruce Willis is the protagonist and is against men who plan a terrorist attack on New York or other huge cities across the US.
One of the greatest and emotionally powerful films I have seen is Saving Private Ryan (1997), it cost an estimated $70,000,000 (£44,476,905) to produce and had been released in 2,886 screen across the USA and UK in 1998. Saving Private Ryan has four main genres that including Action, Drama, History and War, these are four huge titles that gain wide audience and popularity across the world. This is a great film but does have one major negative .. it has a limited audience due to the topic that has been used. It is a very difficult film to take in and has a huge affect on your emotions because of how real it seems, it can bring a tear to the eye because it shows how many innocent lives were lost in the conflict. This however is perfect for film producers as it helps create the ideal atmosphere and portrays the correct images.
Genre Conventions - Romance
In any genre conventions there are a number of factors that have to be considered for it to work, these include themes, settings, characters, plotlines, narrative structure, mood, props and significant objects. Often to be seen in romantic films are props such as chocolates, jewelry and flowers. It allows the characters to unite and socialise with one another.
One of the main codes and conventions of a romance style genre is the stereotypical scenario of "boy meets girl", you would typically find that it has a happy ending. However to break the rules we have decided to add a little twist to the film that can turn it around to something that isn't expected to happen.
